Mümtaz’er Türköne’s trial on charges of insulting the President postponed

Türköne, who was trialed for his article published five years ago, drew attention to the statute of limitations.

Writer and academician held in Silivri Prison for over three years Mümtazer Türköne’s trial which he accused for defamation to president, went on.

According to what P24 cited (Independent Journalism Platform) Türköne attended the trial via SEGBIS (online trial device). Türköne said in his defense that the word “necrophilia” which means corpse-admiring, in an article published in 2014 does not constitute an insult.

Türköne stated that there is a statute of limitations for his case regarding his criticizing words about 15-year-old Berkin Elvan, who was shot in the head by the police during the Gezi Resistance and died 269 days later in the hospital where he was taken.

Chief judge interrupted Türköne’s defence saying that court has to go on with the other cases. Türköne stated that he wanted to complete his defense.

Later deputy of the president by taking floor stated that they don’t not accept the defendant’s defense as he used the word “necrophilia” clearly about the President. “We want him to be punished.”

Mumtaz’er Türköne’s lawyer said that he would present his defense on the merits after the declaration of Türköne was completed. Thereupon court , by declaring it’s interim decision, decided to give time for Türköne and his lawyer to prepare their case and postponed the case to 31 October.
